Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
★★★½
Director: Ryan Coogler
After the loss of The Black Panther’s King T’Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, we have a sequel to the Marvel franchise that delivers a powerful tribute with a compelling story of unity and perseverance. This film is directed by Ryan Coogler, who also directed the previous Black Panther in 2018 and directed films such as Fruitvale Station and Creed.
The movie explores Wakanda after King T’Challa’s sudden death, exploring their collective grief and journey in leading their country in changing times and the events of a new enemy which threatens Wakanda’s security. The sister of T’Challa, Princess Shuri played by Letitia Wright rises as a leading character, with the help of her mother and allies strives to help defend Wakanda against this new enemy while also struggling with her grief of losing her brother and the anger which enfolds.
The themes in this movie include the struggle of war, family, race and grief. Angela Bassett and Letitia Wright both have strong performances when confronted with intense emotions relating to T’Challa’s death. This movie is about mourning and grief of the sudden loss of their hero which impacts on Wakanda’s identity and culture.
A Marvel movie with excellent graphics does seem to fall short with some narrative issues which makes a large run time with irrelevant plot points and characters that didn’t need to be there. This movie has lots of flashbacks which creates a sense of confusion when jumping in time throughout the run time.
This movie is a beautiful tribute and recollection of T’Challa and Chadwick Boseman’s character, with excellent acting which helps make this film emotional and action filled. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a powerful Marvel film and an enjoyable watch for the family or friends to enjoy whether at the cinema or on your couch.
