Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

★★★★

Director: Christopher McQuarrie

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie join once again for Mission Impossible comeback off the heels of the highly successful previous movies Mission Impossible: Fallout and Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick. The highly anticipated Dead Reckoning delivered more than enough for the Mission Impossible fandom.

Returning into the franchise we see Tom Cruise back with Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Czerny returning for Dead Reckoning. Hayley Atwell does a fantastic job as the new character in the Mission Impossible series being Ethan Hunt’s new mission partner throughout the movie. Esai Morales stars as the lead adversary to Hunt, playing a powerful terrorist who uses artificial intelligence system to rule the world.

The story of Dead Reckoning is spread across multiple countries from the United States to Italy and revolves around an artificial intelligence weapon created to cause international warfare. Ethan Hunt and his team accept a mission to bring back a key from arms dealers which unlocks and controls the AI system.

The story is not as strong as other Mission Impossible films, with the action and set pieces more of a focus point for the movie. There tended to be disjointed pacing in the movie which made some plot points uncertain to keep up with. The graphics in the film at times looked unrealistic, however, this doesn’t take away how good the movie is. The story remains filled with Ethan Hunt and his team running, jumping, and flying to save the world.

Humour is subtle throughout the movie with Cruise and Atwell sharing strong chemistry and comedic timing to provide some comedy relief during high-speed car chases. Mission Impossible is mainly known for its daring stunts, this comedy relief is a nice addition to the movie giving it harmless fun and producing one of the funniest Mission Impossible films.

As this movie is part one, Dead Reckoning doesn’t have a complete ending, unlike most movies in the franchise. Instead, it ends with more questions that leaves us in the hope that part two will answer.

Dead Reckoning: Part One was a fun and action-packed movie showing more of Ethan Hunt doing what he does best, saving the world one bullet at a time. We look forward to the next instalment, hoping for a more fleshed out story paying homage to the legacy of Mission Impossible.

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One is out in cinemas now.
