Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

★★★

Director: Tim Burton

Beetlejuice Bettlejuice follows the story of Lydia and her family, who return to their home town, Winter River. Once back home, the demon Beetlejuice returns to bring chaos and disorder. This movie is a direct sequel to the original 1988 movie Beetlejuice and is an absurd comedy with witty, heartfelt and gripping humour.

This movie has a propelling rewatch factor because of its sharp sense of humour, and the creative and unique storyline. Most of the characters in this movie are over the top and ridiculous, which makes the movie funnier. The characters are involved in strange situations, especially in the afterlife, in their post-death outfits and reactions. To summarise this movie in two words; funny & bizarre.

Winona Ryder returns as her gothic character Lydia, who is now an adult working as a television psychic who can communicate with ghosts. Jenna Ortego plays Lydia’s teenage daughter who is struggling with the loss of her father. Catherine O’Hara plays Lydia’s stepmother; bringing multiple laughs into this movie with her character’s artistic glow. Micheal Keaton returns to play the original Beetlejuice and brings to the screen many wild antics.

The premise is similar to the original movie which includes, when anyone says Beetlejuice three times, the demon appears to ‘haunt’ them. This movie includes a variety of events such as teen romance, forced marriages, plane crashes, accidental deaths, and a large amount of soul dancing. Because of the movie’s witty sense of humour, most death references are shrouded with humour, making the film not scary.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a film that directly corresponds to the original movie, therefore is best watched with having a basic knowledge of the original. A lot of characters from the original movie return, and some of these references may go over your head if you haven’t seen the original. However, this film provides an abundance of enjoyment & laughter without the need of any prior knowledge of the original movie.
